Stay on Track with Your New Year’s Resolution

If we had a dollar for every time we’ve heard “A New Year, A New You”, we’d have a lot of dollars, am I right?  But it’s true, there is a sense of a fresh beginning that comes with each January.  We have lofty goals and aspirations this time of year, but come February, a lot of us have fallen off the wagon.  Here at Garcia Weight Loss and Wellness, we’ve come up with a few ways to avoid common resolution pitfalls:

  • Be kind to yourself.  So you gave in and had dessert (maybe even a lot of dessert), it doesn’t mean you’ve failed, it’s just a hiccup.  Don’t use it as an excuse to throw the rest of your hard work out the window, just get back on track.
  • Have reasonable expectations.  Deciding all of a sudden that you’re going to eat a Paleo diet might be a stretch if you’re used to only eating processed or fast foods.  There is nothing wrong with a challenge, but try not to set yourself up for failure.
  • Shrink your timeline.  Start small with a manageable goal, like “I will get 30 minutes of exercise 4 times this week.”  Build on small successes and adjust your goals as you get more comfortable in your new routine.
  • Buddy up.  Use your friends (or social media or apps) to help support you in your resolutions.  Accountability can work wonders to keep you on track.
  • Pinpoint your motivation and use it.  Hang your skinny jeans up where you can see them.  Make a vision board with pictures of your end goal like the finish line of a race.   Follow a Pinterest user that posts awesome workouts or motivational quotes that you enjoy.  Follow the good stuff and the good stuff will follow.
